Because until today the medical condition and the medical care of Filep Karma did not improve, the Foundation Pro Papua wrote a letter as below to the Dutch minister of Foreign Affairs.

Dear mister Verhagen,
With this letter we want to express our deepest concern regarding the denial of medical care to prisoners in Papua, in this case in particular, to Filep Karma.
He has been convicted on May 26th 2005 to 15 years in prison for unfolding the Papuan national flag.
We have been informed about the serious medical condition of Filep Karma by, among others, the association Papua Vrouwen in Nederland (PVN - Papuan Women in The Netherlands) and the UK based human rights organization TAPOL. Filep Karma does not receive the proper medical attention required as is shown from the information included*.
Therefore we ask you to contact the Indonesian authorities at short notice and request them to take their responsibility in general regarding their convicts and to admit Filep Karma to the necessary medical attention.
During your visit to Indonesia in January 2009 you discussed the “possible pioneering role of Indonesia in the field of human rights and democratization”. It seems evident that the Filep Karma case leaves sufficient room to point out this pioneering role to Indonesia once more.

Met deze brief willen wij onze diepe bezorgdheid uitspreken over het onthouden van medische zorg aan gevangenen in Papua en in dit geval, met name, aan Filep Karma.
Deze is op 26 mei 2005 veroordeeld tot 15 jaar gevangenisstraf voor het ontvouwen van de Papuavlag.
Onder andere via de vereniging Papua Vrouwen in Nederland (PVN) en de Engelse mensenrechtenorganisatie TAPOL werden wij geïnformeerd over de slechte gezondheidstoestand van Filep Karma, die niet die medische zorg krijgt zoals dit behoort, hetgeen blijkt uit de bijgesloten informatie*.
Wij vragen u derhalve, op korte termijn contact op te nemen met de Indonesische autoriteiten en hen te verzoeken in het algemeen hun verantwoordelijkheid ten opzichte van gevangenen te nemen en in dit geval Filep Karma omgaand toegang te verlenen tot de noodzakelijke medische zorg.
Het mag duidelijk zijn dat, waar bij uw bezoek aan Indonesië in januari 2009 eveneens werd gesproken over de voortrekkersrol die Indonesië wil spelen in de regio op het gebied van mensenrechten en democratisering, dit alle ruimte biedt om hen hierop te wijzen.
