The SEA Games 2023 in Cambodia has concluded, Indonesia has come in 3rd place in the overall medal tally with 87 gold under Vietnam with 136 gold and Thailand with 108 gold. A total of 15 Indonesian medals were presented by Papuan athletes.
Chairman of the Indonesian National Sports Committee (KONI) in Papua Province Kenius Kogoya, Thursday (18/5/2023) said that the achievements made by Papuan athletes in the international level championship were a matter of pride for Papua.
“Papuan athletes have made an extraordinary contribution for Indonesia in the international arena and these are the prayers and hopes of the Papuan people,” he said.
Gold medals were won by Priska Madelyn Nugroho from the women’s team and individual tennis, Maria Corazon Konjep Wombaki and Sang Ayu Nyoman from women’s cricket, and Chico Aura Dwi Wardoyo from men’s team badminton.
“The Papuan athlete Jeam Kelly Sroyer also managed to donate gold for Indonesia from football,” he said.
Meanwhile, silver medals were won by Ester Wardoyo from women’s team badminton, Maylen Christy Aupe from kun bokator, Farel Armindo Tangkas from the 100 metres backstroke swimming.
“Other medal winners were Maria Corazon Konjep Wombaki and Sang Ayu Nyoman from the women’s over 50 and twenty-20 (T20) cricket events and Chico Aura Dwi Wardoyo from men’s individual badminton,” he said again.
Meanwhile, bronze medals were presented by Agustinus Abadi Ndiken from javelin throwing athletics, Samuel Frekson Wouw from kun bokator in the 70-kilogram weight class, and Julius Rizhad Rumaropen from men’s outdoor hockey.
“There were also Paulina Ronsumbre and Ruth Bransik from women’s outdoor hockey and Ester Wardoyo from women’s individual badminton,” he continued.
Glorious Achievement in Football
Despite not becoming the overall champion, Indonesia succeeded in once again winning the gold medal from football after 32 years. The Garuda Nusantara squad was able to end the three decades-long wait for the gold medal after conquering its long-time rival, Thailand, with a landslide score of 5-2 in the final round which took place on Tuesday (16/5/2023) night WIB.
As is known, the Indonesian national team has long been absent from climbing to the highest podium of SEA Games football. The best achievement recorded is only silver. The Red and White team won the last gold medal at the 1991 SEA Games in the Philippines.
The success of Marselino Ferdinan and friends to restore the glory of Indonesian football at the SEA Games 2023 Cambodia inevitably received much appreciation from the country.
PSSI Executive Committee member Arya Sinulingga claimed the football federation has prepared a parade as a form of appreciation for the achievements of the Indonesian U-22 national team in the ASEAN multi-event championship.
“The purpose of this event is to honour all players and team officials because they have won the SEA Games 2023 gold medal in Cambodia. This is a long-awaited gold medal, which lasted 32 years, after we last won it at the SEA Games Manila, Philippines, in 1991,” said Arya, quoted from the PSSI website.
“After that, (this event is also intended) to provide opportunities for people who have been supporting the U-22 team’s struggle to see and meet the players in person,” he added.
