Hello friend,

Later this year, the Melanesian Spearhead Group (MSG) will meet for the MSG leader’s summit, where they will decide whether to admit the United Liberation Movement for West Papua (ULMWP) as a full member of the group.

Full membership of the MSG would be the most significant achievement for the Liberation Movement at the international level.

By recognising the ULMWP as a fully legitimate representative of its Melanesian population – equal to Papua New Guinea, Vanuatu, or Fiji – it would officially challenge Indonesia’s right to occupy the region.

What is the Melanesian Spearhead Group?

The MSG is a regional forum that represents all Melanesian nations.

Since 2015, the ULMWP has sat as an Observer member – it was the first international recognition of West Papua as a ‘country in waiting’ since 1963.

The core principles of the MSG state that all Melanesians have an ‘inalienable right to self-determination’.

The ULMWP needs full membership if West Papua is to realise this right.
