Ter informatie de nieuwe uitgekomen rapportage van de International Coalition for Papua (ICP).

In de Pacific heeft men genoeg van de mensenrechtenschendingen in Papua en werd dit op 23 september 2016 ook duidelijk in de Algemene Vergadering van de Verenigde Naties benoemd.

De Indonesische Dr. Budi Hernawan verteld in zijn bijdrage, hoe de vork precies in de steel zit.

En op 27 August 2016 toont de Brimob in Sugapa (district Intan Jaya) hoe zij omgaan met ons Nederlandse concept ‘community policing’.

Pacific states speak out on human rights violations in West Papua

New York, September 23rd 2016 - During the General Assembly of the UN, representatives of five Pacific states voiced their concerns about the human rights situation in West Papua. "This great body cannot and must not ignore these deplorable situations, it must not hide behind the guise of the principles of non-interference and sovereignty" said Hon. Enele Sosene Sopoanga, Prime Minister of Tuvalu. Vanuatu, Nauru, The Solomon Islands and the Marshall Islands also highlighted the problems in their statements.

Listening to the Pacific beat on Papua

In an unprecedented move, seven UN member states from the Pacific raised their concerted voices on Papua during the prestigious 71st session of the UN General Assembly in New York this week.

Nauru started the intervention by highlighting the issue of human rights violations in Papua, followed by a newcomer in the discourse of Papua: the Marshall Islands.

Vanuatu, Tuvalu and the Solomon Islands followed suit and went one step further by specifically highlighting the issue of the right to self-determination for Papuans. Tonga emphasised the gravity of the problem and Palau, another novice, called for constructive dialogue with Indonesia to solve the Papua issue.

Brimob chase teenage boy, shooting him dead outside his house

A high school student was killed by Brimob guards on the morning of Saturday 27th August in the highland town of Sugapa, Intan Jaya Regency. Otinus Sondegau had been drinking on the street with friends when the Brimob guards were called, who ended up pursuing him through the streets, shooting him dead as he reached the front of his house. Another teenager was reportedly shot in the hand in the incident, and others narrowly dodged bullets. The community, in response, burned the local police station to the ground.

Human Rights defender Olga Hamadi dies at 34

Papuan human rights lawyer Olga Helena Hamadi died in a hospital in Jayapura on July 28th 2016 after a long period of illness. The exact cause of death is not yet known. Olga Hamadi worked for the legal aid organisation LBH Papua and the Commission for the disappeared and victims of violence (KontraS Papua). She took on politically sensitive cases, mainly of indigenous Papuans who were charged with high treason for voicing their opinions and taking part in demonstrations. Many of her clients were unlawfully arrested and tortured in custody. Security forces frequently obstructed meetings of Hamadi with her clients.

About the ICP

Human Rights and Peace for Papua is an international coalition of faith-based and civil society organisations (the Coalition) addressing the serious human rights condition in West Papua and supporting a peaceful solution to the conflict there. West Papua (Papua) refers to the western half of the New Guinea island in the Pacific and comprises the eastern most provinces of Indonesia. Indigenous Papuans are suffering from a long and ongoing history of human rights violations and security forces subject them to violence including killings, torture and arbitrary arrests. Impunity prevails. A lack of adequate access to health care and education as well as demographical and economical marginalisation and discrimination mark the living condition for Papuans. A heavy presence of Indonesian security forces, lack of access for international observers such as journalists, corruption and transmigration from other parts of Indonesia aggravate the situation. Political prisoners and the persecution of political activists shows the extent of repression with which freedom of expression and indigenous peoples’ rights are being violated. Papua’s wealth in natural resources attracts businesses and security forces resulting in exploitation through mining, logging, harmful agricultural projects, and environmental degradation. This dynamic challenges traditional indigenous culture while Papuans demand their right to self-determination.
