Jakarta. A mine worker was killed in a rockfall at Freeport Indonesia’s Grasberg mine in Tembagapura, Papua, on Saturday.

“The incident occurred at around 4 a.m. local time on Saturday. Tembagapura Police chief Adj. Comr. Sudirman was informed that there had been a work accident at the Grasberg Block Cav, 2,670 meters above sea level,” Papua Police spokesman Sr. Comr. Sulistyo Pudjo Hartono said on Sunday.

Workers were reportedly installing safety equipment on the tunnel’s ceiling with the help of a heavy equipment called a “jumbo jack” when rocks started falling.

“The ceiling suddenly fell in on Roby Hermawan [operator of the equipment]. Police officers and members of the rescue team tried to search for the victim and he was eventually found dead at 00.30 a.m. on Sunday,” Sulistyo said.

Roby’s body was recovered by rescuers, and was subsequently sent to a hospital in Tembagapura. The team also managed to evacuate and save another victim in the incident.

Freeport Indonesia spokeswoman Daisy Primayanti was not available for comment on the matter on Sunday afternoon.
