Jakarta (ANTARA News) - In the city of Manokwari, the West Papua provincial capital, lights were totally off Friday night following an earthquake measuring 6 on the Richter scale which struck at 8:15 p.m. local time, or 6.15 p.m in Jakarta.

Maruli, a Jakartan said he received the bad news from his relative in Manokwari that the city was in total darkness and most residents preferred to stay outdoors for fear of an aftershock.

"Residents of Manokwari are still in panic," Maruli said, quoting his relative as saying.

Head of the earthquake and tsunami center of the meteorology, climatology and geophysics agency (BMKG) Fauzi said the quake`s epicenter was located 0.91 degrees southern latitude and 134.18 degrees eastern longitude at a depth of 23 kilometers, 13 km southeast of Manokwari.

Fauzi added however that the quake has no potential to trigger a tsunami.

By 11 p.m local time, or 9 p.m in Jakarta, reports on fatalities and material damage were still awaited.
