JAKARTA: A 6.1-magnitude earthquake rocked West Papua on Sunday at 10.36 a.m. local time (12:36 p.m. Jakarta time) with no reports of casualties or damage.

The Geophysics, Climatology, and Meteorology Agency (BMKG) said on its website that the epicenter of was located 123 kilometers Northwest of Manokwari, West Papua at a depth of 56 kilometers.

A 5.3-magnitude earthquake also shook Gorontalo province at 12.40 p.m. The epicenter of the quake was 25 kilometers below sea level and 108 kilometers northwest of Gorontalo.

The quake caused residents to panic but they went back to their homes when it stopped.

"I thought it was just a strong wind but then the windows and lamps were shaking," Mila, one of the residents, told Antara state news agency. - JP
