The head of Papua transportation office Soleman Wairo said that a number of international airline companies had requested the restoration of the airport's position as a stopover point for flights on the Bali-Honolulu-Los Angeles route, the head of the Papua transportation office.

He said that various new support facilities had already been setup at Biak's airport in preparation for its reopening for international air services.

Besides, the Papua transportation office had established coordination with the Biak district administration on the management of various tourist objects in the island, located in the top of Cendrawasi Bay or the Papua mainland.

Biak island was a battle zone during World War II and therefore it is home to many objects and spots related to the past fighting between Allied Forces and Japanese troops that were now of tourists' interest.

The island's waters also hold sea gardens for tourists to explore as well as other smaller tropical islands with pristine white sandy beaches and crystal-clear waters, a varied fish population, coral reefs and diving spots.

Therefore, the reopening of Frans Kaisiepo airport for international flights would have a positive impact on the development in Papua.
